The Silver State Junior Striders date back to 1979, when several key members of the Reno Track Club combined forces with the Silver State Striders to create a powerhouse youth running program. Under the direction of a legendary coach, Bruce Susong, who coached the team for nearly three decades, the Junior Striders earned dozens of individual and team titles in age-group track and field and cross country. Dozens of Junior Striders, including future NCAA All-Americans such as Miesha Marzell (Georgetown University) and Marie “Mel” Lawrence (University of Washington, a three-time Footlocker National Cross Country runner-up), went on to compete in collegiate cross country and track. The Junior Striders also hosted national championship meets in Reno on at least three occasions, including the 1988, 2000 and 2009 Junior Olympic/USATF national age group cross country championships.
The team currently holds practices during both cross country and track seasons. The Junior Striders program is led by Coach JoAnne Banducci. The program, which competes at age-group meets throughout the calendar year, is designed to help beginners master the fundamentals of distance running, while also helping more experienced athletes realize their full potential. Together, these two approaches come together in a fun, enriching introduction to what will hopefully lead to a lifetime of running.
