Silver State 50/50 (Course update see "Note:" section below)

Welcome to the Silver State Striders 50/50 Endurance Run and trail half-marathon on Saturday, May 15 in Reno, Nev.

Races and times: 50-mile start is 6 a.m. 50-kilometer start is 7 a.m. Trail half-marathon start is 8 a.m. Location: Rancho San Rafael Park, Reno.

Registration fees: 50M registration is $65 through May 8, and $75 thereafter; 50K registration is $55 through May 8, and $65 thereafter; Trail half-marathon is $40 through May 8, and $50 thereafter. Race-day registration will be available this year!

This is the 24th running of the Endurance Runs and the third for the trail half-marathon. The 50/50 has a long and rich history as one of the most challenging trail runs on the West Coast. The 50/50 offers a wide variety of terrain for all types of runners, with plenty of climbing and descending. Our course has enough dirt, rock, pine trees, excellent singletrack, altitude and exquisite views of the Sierra Nevada and the Truckee Meadows to satisfy the demands of runners who yearn for a fun, challenging day. Both our 50-mile and 50-kilometer races are considered excellent trainers for the Western States 100-miler and the Tahoe Rim Trail 100-miler. Our trail half-marathon provides 13.1 miles of singletrack, with climbing and descending through some of the most memorable country in the West. No matter what event you chose, you will find a well-marked course, friendly volunteers, lots of nourishment, salty and sweet goodies at the aid stations plus great post-race massages, fun, food and drink at the start/finish at Rancho San Rafael Park.

NOTE: Due to an unforeseen wish of a private property owner near the Ranch Creek aid station, the 50M course have been slightly altered. THE RANCH CREEK AID STATION WILL NOW BE LOCATED LESS THAN A MILE BELOW THE ORIGINAL LOCATION, and will be accessed by a new singletrack trail approximately 1 ¼ miles long following the completion of the Long Valley/Dog Valley loop. For 50M runners, this means there will be no aid station between Peavine Summit (12.5 miles) and Long Valley (19 miles). The new Ranch Creek aid station will now be located at the 28-mile mark, where drop bags will be available. 50K runners will continue on what is essentially the same course as years past; they will drop down from the Peavine aid station, run to the location of the old Ranch Creek aid station, and then turn left at the junction and proceed about a half mile down the road to the location of the new Ranch Creek aid station. Drop bags for 50K runners will also be available at this new location. The only change to the 50K course will be a one-mile loop that will now be run in Rancho San Rafael Park at the beginning of the race in order to accommodate a change in finish (hence the additional mile difference in 50K v. 50M mileages for Radio Towers, Pond, Peavine Summit).

Driving directions to start/finish at Rancho San Rafael Park: From Interstate 80, take Virginia Street exit (Exit 13). From I-80 East, you will head north and turn left onto N. Virginia Street. Coming from I-80 West, you will turn right onto N. Virginia Street. Follow Virginia Street 0.7miles, then turn left onto 15th Street. Drive up the hill on 15th Street, then turn right onto Sierra Street. Follow Sierra 0.1 miles to Rancho San Rafael Park (1595 N. Sierra Street). Turn left into the park and volunteers will direct you to the parking area for the race.

PRE-RACE MEETING, PACKET PICKUP AND DROP BAG COLLECTION: All runners must be at the Friday, May 14 runner check-in and packet pickup at Eclipse Pizza (located at the corner of Mayberry Drive and McCarran Blvd., behind Walden’s Coffeehouse). Packet pickup will be from 5-8 p.m. The pre-race trail conditions briefing will be held at 6:45 p.m. Race day T-shirt and bib number pickup is also available starting at 5 a.m. at Rancho San Rafael Park. To get to Eclipse Pizza, exit Interstate 80 onto McCarran Boulevard (turn right onto McCarran from I-80 East, turn left onto McCarran from I-80 West). Follow McCarran downhill, past Fourth Street. Continue on McCarran until you reach Mayberry Drive. Eclipse Pizza, located at the Mayberry Landing Shopping Center, is on the right-hand side of McCarran once you are through the intersection at Mayberry. Parking is also available at Roy Gomm School directly behind the Mayberry Landing Shopping Center.

50M and 50K drop bag information: Ranch Creek and Peavine drop bags must be dropped off on Friday, May 14 at Eclipse Pizza no later than 8 p.m. River Bend aid station drop bags can be dropped off at the starting line at Rancho San Rafael Park on Saturday, May 15, beginning at 5 a.m.

RACE DAY INFORMATION:

The 50M start is 6 a.m. The 50K start is 7 a.m. The trail half-marathon start is 8 a.m.

CHECK-IN: All runners MUST check in prior to the start of their race on race morning. Check-in for each event begins approximately one hour before the start. The course runs through remote areas and we MUST know who actually started. Due to runner feedback, we have added an additional two hours to the race’s final cutoff. This year’s race will have a 14-hour absolute cutoff time limit and ALL runners must complete the course by 8 p.m. The will be a 2 p.m. cutoff enforced for runners at the River Bend (mile 33) aid station. There will be a 5 p.m. cutoff enforced for 50M runners at the Peavine Summit (mile 39) aid station. The cutoffs are non-negotiable and are in effect for the safety of our runners. Any runner who chooses to disregard these cutoffs will be immediately disqualified from the race. In an effort to help runners on the long, relentless climb from River Bend to the top of Peavine, a fully stocked aid station will again be located approximately halfway between these two aid stations at about mile 36 near the sandy road/whale rock area of the course. Good luck making it back to the top again this year!

COURSE DETAILS: There are seven aid stations for the 50K and 12 for the 50M. The course is run on 99 percent dirt trails and dirt roads. Elevations: Runners climb 5,800 feet and descend 5,800 feet in the 50K; runners climb/descend 9,200 feet in the 50M. Elevation high is 8,200 feet. Low: 4,700 feet. NOTE: The 50K is now a legitimate 31-miler; in years past, it was 34.5 miles. Also note that due to 2007’s Hawken Fire, the course no longer takes runners into the Carson Range on Reno’s west flank – no more 8-mile climb to the Microwave Station. The likelihood of encountering snow on our new course configuration is remote.

AID STATION ACCESS: Only the River Bend aid station is accessible via vehicle and is open to runner crews. To get to the River Bend aid station, take Interstate 80 West from Reno to the Verdi/Business off-ramp. Follow this road toward Verdi for a bit over a mile. The road curves (bends) with the river. Located at the middle of the bend on the right is a wide dirt parking area. Parking is limited, so plan on arriving early to see your runner.

NUMBERS: Please wear them on the front of your body. Recording your number as you approach each aid station helps the race officials there get you through the aid station quickly. You must check in and out with the race official at each aid station. We need to keep track of everyone on this mostly remote and highly inaccessible course.

PACERS WELCOME: Runners can be accompanied by pacers over the final 17 miles of the course. Pacer access is at the River Bend aid station at mile 33. Please check in with the aid station captain at River Bend before beginning your pacing duties.

DROPS: In the unlikely event that you are dropping out, please do so at an aid station. Tell the race official at the aid station of your decision. We cannot promise immediate transportation back to civilization. You may need to wait a while before the aid station personnel can give you a ride. Please be courteous to all aid station and race volunteers. RUNNERS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO REMAIN AT THE AID STATION WHERE THEY HAVE DROPPED OUT. IF YOU CHOOSE TO RUN BACK TO THE START/FINISH LINE ON YOUR OWN, WE WILL HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING WHERE YOU ARE AND IF YOU EVER ARRIVED SAFELY AT RANCHO SAN RAFAEL. RUNNERS WHO CHOOSE TO DO THIS DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK.

FINISH LINE: Awards will be presented as runners finish at Rancho San Rafael Park. Soup, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, chili and desserts and soda and water will be served at the finish to revive you. Students from the Ralston School of Massage will provide great massages to relieve your soreness.

AGE GROUP AWARDS: Awards will be presented to the overall men’s and women’s winners of the 50M, 50K, and half-marathon. In addition, age group awards will be presented to the champions of the following divisions in the 50K and 50M: 19 and under; 20-20; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and over.
